The Shannon Class – in more ways than one....

One of our chosen school charities, the RNLI, has just announced that the name of their new class of lifeboat is to be the SHANNON Class! In honour of this, our own Mrs. Shannon’s Form Class decided to put their hands in their pockets and make a special extra contribution towards the schools Raft Race total.
They researched what the new lifeboat would look like and put the picture on a special collection box in their Form Room, raising £33.26. Well done to Mrs. Shannon’s team!

As you can see, the weather on the day of the Raft Race was so rough that the event was staged in Portrush harbour. This event has long had the support of our school, with some of the staff becoming the ‘Soggy Sea Dogs’ for the day once again. On board were Mrs. Mullan, Mr. Parker, Mr. Dougherty, Mr. Bingham, Mr. Law and Mr. Lutton.
Our fearless crew managed a very respectable time, and at the moment the total they raised for the RNLI stands at £610. Well done to all involved, and many thanks to those who sponsored the teachers to get wet!

It was great to see some ‘supporters’ at the harbour in Portrush on such a wet and windy day. Mr. Mitchell, our resident member of the lifeboat crew, is pictured in his natural environment, and also at a special assembly before the event (he’s the one who is not Amy Purdy, his glamorous assistant).

Children in Need
Charity work is an important and ongoing feature of school life here at Dunluce. While our main effort by far is the support we give to the Ulster Cancer Foundation through the Causeway Ramble, charity work continues in one way or another throughout the year. In November, when the BBC Children in Need Appeal was approaching, Chloe Henry and Emma Scott came up with the idea of filling a sweet jar with a variety of sweets and asking people to donate 20p for the chance of winning the whole jar! All people had to do was guess the number of sweets in the jar.

The girls became regulars behind their special desk near the library for a couple of weeks.
A queue of pupils (and adults!) could be seen with their money in hand each day as the anticipation grew. When the competition closed and sums were done, the girls were thrilled to find out that they had raised £175.16, which was duly sent off to the BBC.

Incidentally, the winner of all those sweets was none other than Miss Heather McKillop our school Art Technician and medical officer.
