A sample of what else has been happening in Dunluce....
Fire Brigade Cadet Scheme

Our Year 10 pupils had a treat in March,
when a couple of local firemen visited
Dunluce. They were here to promote the Fire Brigade Cadet Scheme.
This is based in
Portrush Fire Station, and is aimed
at young people in the area. Nathan Cassidy
and Charlie Milczarek were on hand
to let the pupils know about the activities and opportunities on offer on
Monday evenings. After being treated to an informative DVD showing what’s on
offer, several Year 10 pupils said they might go along and find out more. We
wish them well….
Drama
Department moderation of GCSE coursework
An appreciative audience of families and
friends were present in the Assembly Hall as our GCSE pupils presented their
drama for moderation by an external examiner.

After the GCSE moderation, our Drama
Department decided to present their own version of the ‘Oscars’ to their Year
12 pupils...
Food
Safety in Catering
The following pupils: Sarah Elliott, Hannah
Millar, Janice Miskelly, Danielle McQuilkin, Kyra McLaughlin, Tina McFarlane
and Danielle Lynch, all studied after school for the Chartered Institute of
Environmental Health’s Level 2 Award for Food Safety in Catering, and passed
the examination in June.

Personal
economics – Year 12
A
new arrival in the Motor Vehicle & Road User Studies Department
In February we were delighted to receive a
call from the Road Safety Department in County Hall, Ballymena. It was the news
we had been waiting for a number of years and now we were finally going to
receive a new moped!
A few days later a brand new Pulse, 50cc
moped (straight out of the factory in China) arrived at the front of the
school. Needless to say, it didn’t take the boys in MV long to try it out for
themselves. It certainly makes our other bikes look and feel their age. Within
weeks the class were sitting their practical riding test over the circuit in
the playground, and it may well be partly down to the new gear, but their
scores were the highest we have ever seen in the subject!

RAF
Band visit
In January our whole school was treated to
a visit by the Band of the Royal Air Force. The musicians said it was good
preparation for their upcoming role at the Royal Wedding in April!
It was a highly entertaining morning, spent
listening to experts at their craft. They are certainly wonderful ambassadors
for the RAF.
As you can see from the photos, some of the
pupils were invited to join the professionals for the whole concert! They said they felt really
privileged and rose to meet the challenge.
Somehow the conductor worked out that Miss
Stewart had always wanted to conduct a big band, so he duly gave her the chance
she had been waiting for. None of us noticed the difference when she took over

Ulster
Bank Mathematics STEM Workshop
Another of the events during the year linked to
the theme of STEM was a workshop for Year 9 pupils arranged by staff from the
Ulster Bank. The pupils were given the opportunity to study the world of
finance from a challenging and thought-provoking point of view. This Government
initiative is aimed at giving pupils in all sectors of education more
experience of the worlds of science, technology, engineering and mathematics
RAF
Presentation
During the year our school was presented
with a brace of paintings showing some of the World War II aircraft that flew
over these shores in the 1940s. Mr. Dougherty, Head of the History Department,
was delighted to receive them on behalf of Dunluce.
The local branch of the British Legion is
delighted to continue to use the Chancellor Guy Hall for their Annual
Remembrance Festival held each November.

Easter
Assembly

A special Easter Assembly was held in
April, with a sketch provided by pupils from Drama classes, and music from some
of Mr. Lutton’s star singers. This all helped to set a tone of reflection and
hope as pupils headed into the Easter break.
January
2011 – a winter to remember, or to forget....?
We all hope it’s some time before we see
the kind of weather conditions that arrived in January. Life on the North Coast
took on a frozen look for a few memorable weeks. The school managed to look
serene before pupils arrived to disturb the snow!
Heartstart
All Year 8 pupils have the chance of
studying for and achieving the British Heart Foundation “Heartstart”
Certificate as part of their science course.
To gain a certificate pupils must deal with
a challenging First Aid scenario by taking charge of the scene and applying the
correct standard of first aid, including CPR, to rescue the casualty.
For the first year, we are awarding a
Heartstart trophy to the pupil who, in the opinion of the instructors handles
the challenge in the most appropriate and confident way.
The first recipient of this trophy is
Sophie McIntyre from 8JM, with runner-up Amy Cutler, also from 8JM.
Congratulations to these two girls in particular, and well done to everyone who
achieved the Certificate.
High
Ropes Course for Year 8
In June Miss McBride’s Form Class had their
turn at the high ropes course. This is now an annual event for our Year 8
pupils, and is done at the Bushmills Outdoor Education Centre (which backs onto
our playing fields).
It’s a time to face a series of real
personal challenges in a very different environment away from the safety of
ground level!
