Sports
Awards Assembly
A full house of keen pupils took their
seats in the Chancellor Guy Hall in June for our annual Sports Awards Assembly.
They were all most eager to find out how they looked on film and which House
had won the overall Sports title.
Our visiting speaker for the day was Mrs. Nolene McConnell. Nolene has been
a keen sportswoman all her life, even representing Northern Ireland in the
Commonwealth Games alongside Mary Peters (back in the 1907s, as some of us can
recall!). More recently, she worked as
Creative & Expressive PE Advisor for the North Eastern Education &
Library Board.
Our guest watched with interest as the
week’s events were presented in a series of highly-entertaining short films by
pupils in the GCSE Media Studies class.
Having helped Mrs. McClintock, Miss McElwee
and Mr. Parker by presenting the various awards, Nolene reminded us of the
importance of always giving your best in competition and never giving up. “You
never know who will turn out to be special in their chosen sport”, she said,
citing the examples of local heroes George Best and Graeme McDowell. We were
even treated to some extracts from the new George Best musical, giving hope and
motivation to all levels of potential local sporting heroes.
Well done to all the pupils and staff
involved!
