“Every one’s a winner!”
During a week of mixed weather in the
wettest June for some years, the PE Department somehow managed to defy the
worst efforts of the north coast conditions and stage a series of four sports
afternoons. We’ve all heard the words at the start of this article, but they
certainly took on a new meaning this year.
Unlike previous years where there was a
crowd of spectators on the single Sports Day, last year’s idea of spreading the
event over a few days was repeated. Participation was the key, with everyone in
PE kit for the day!
More pupils than ever found themselves
taking part in a specially-arranged series of sporting activities in the school
grounds. This included hockey, football, a variety of athletics events and
cross-country (around the perimeter of the school grounds – some pupils found
themselves in unfamiliar territory!).
Competition was fierce in all events, with
individuals striving to excel in their chosen events. The football was switched
to the tennis courts area for safety reasons, but this only served to spur the
teams on to greater efforts.... all that new tarmac certainly paid off.
Each sports afternoon featured a different
year group, with pupils divided into the four School Houses they were allocated
to at the start of the year. Competition was tight but fair, with Ramore House
emerging as overall winners at the end of the week.
An added bonus this year was provided by
our GCSE Media Studies pupils. They filmed, edited and presented their own
unique version of the whole week in a special Assembly where the sports awards
were handed out. Some of the pupils and staff were seen on film performing some
very strange dance moves! Isn’t CGI a wonderful thing!
