Media Studies

Our newest GCSE subject is Media Studies....

September 2009 has been the beginning of many new things here at Dunluce. We have new first years, new prefects, a couple of new teachers and a brand new GCSE subject. Fifteen Year 11 pupils have signed up to GCSE Media Studies.

We asked two of these pupils, Gerald Kane and Courtney Dinsmore, to interview each other so we could find out a little bit more about the new subject....

Courtney: “Gerald, what do you think about the new subject of Media Studies so far?”
Gerald: “I think it’s great. It is really different and there are a lot of new experiences
for me to enjoy throughout the whole course. I have never had the
opportunity to try film making and I’m excited about that. What about you,
Courtney?”
Courtney: “I would have to agree. Media Studies encourages me to explore a range of
media texts and products such as television, radio, films, newspapers and
magazines, all of which I really enjoy! I would definitely encourage anyone
who enjoys this sort of thing that they should totally pick Media for GCSE.
What made you interested in this new subject, Gerald?”
Gerald: “I chose the subject because it sounded really exciting. I love watching TV
and movies. Who doesn’t? Do you think this subject will benefit us in
later life, Courtney?”
Courtney: “I would love to be an interior designer. This is maybe not a job that you
would associate with Media Studies, but we are studying so much about
popular culture that it will keep me aware of all the latest fashions and trends.
I can see that it will also benefit many others who would like to make a career
in journalism, teaching or perhaps something like working with computers.
What have you enjoyed learning about so far, Gerald?”
Gerald: “I am really enjoying learning about film. We have studied how movies are
made, marketed and distributed. We have even watched some clips from
movies in class. Next week we are learning to make and edit our own films
with cameras and editing equipment. That should be fun. So finally,
Courtney, would you recommend Media Studies as a GCSE subject?”
Courtney: “In a word....totally!”

Anyone interested in getting a taste for this subject can look out for the Film Making Club which will start after school, in the New Year.
