Drama department

2008/09 will see our first set of Year 11s study this course. They will study options chosen by the teacher and then their 3 best options are offered up to the examination board and make up 60% of the marks (20% per unit). The set text and scripted performance units are always chosen as they link in the best with the written paper.
Resources
I took responsibility for the requisitions and the bids this year as this is ‘curriculum based’ and this came with full backing from Mr. McClarty, who is very much involved in creating a new Media Department. This is also a very exciting development in the school and there are many cross-over links between these two subjects which will only help in the development and strengthening of both departments.
Educational visits
The Drama Club also went to see Portrush Music Society’s production of “Oklahoma”, starring our very own drama teacher, Mr. McClarty. 18 pupils went to the Riverside Theatre for the event and they were an absolute credit to the school. Their manners and behaviour were impeccable and it was a real joy to be out at the Theatre with such lovely children. A very enjoyable evening was had by all.

On 23rd June, we took 21 pupils to see a professional production of Willy Russell’s famous musical “Blood Brothers” at the Grand Opera House. It was a fantastic evening and the pupils and teachers were astounded at the quality of the acting and singing in the performance. These pupils are studying “Blood Brothers” next year for GCSE Drama and are extremely excited about getting their teeth into creating the characters in the musical. They really are up for the challenge and their enthusiasm and commitment to the subject should see them do very well in their GCSE course.

The fact that we can foster talent at Dunluce may mean that some day we could be watching ex-pupils from Dunluce on the West End stage. It takes teachers to recognize particular talent and grow that talent to enable those pupils to reach their full potential in this area.
