English is a core subject and is compulsory for all pupils from Years 8 to 12. At every age pupils are encouraged to talk, to ask questions, to participate in discussion and to perform. They have many opportunities to read a wide range of texts to perfect their writing skills for a variety of purposes and audiences.
Assessment:
At Key Stage 3: three standardised assessments are given each year, as well as regular homework, in order to stimulate progression and to monitor pupil attainment.
At Key Stage 4 pupils are entered for GCSE English Language and may be entered for GCSE English Literature.
We also offer a course in Essential Skills English at KS4 level.
'To write or even speak English is not a science but an art. Whoever writes English is involved in a struggle that never lets up even for a sentence. He is struggling against vagueness, against the lure of the decorative adjective, against the encroachment of Latin and Greek, and, above all, against the worn-out phrases and dead metaphors with which the language is cluttered up.'
- George Orwell
