Flight competition

Our school was invited to enter a competition run by Bombardier Shorts, the plane-makers in Belfast. This was known as the "Flight Experience Centenary Challenge" and involved making and flying a model aircraft made entirely from recycled materials such as cardboard and plastics. This had to be capable of flying at least 2 metres.

The process began in April, when Mr. Tony Monaghan, Bombardier's Education Liason Officer, visited the science department in school and delivered a presentation about what was involved. Before leaving, he offered our plane-makers places on a special promotional flight from Belfast in June!

For some 2 months our teams of pairs worked on their designs after school, under the watchful eye of Mr. Mitchell. At the end of May, they travelled to W5 in Belfast for the competition and judging. All our teams were highly placed, with Andrew McAlister and Jake Wilson taking 4th place in the Key Stage 3 section. The judges were very impressed with the designs and flights of our planes!

The promotional flight took place on Sunday 22 June, when the competitors were joined by some members of staff for a fantastic day out above County Down, courtesy of Bombardier.

Congratulations to Leah Jones, Marcus Galbraith, James McLaughlin, Rebekan January, Gillian Goodman, Jamie-Lee Douglas, Andrew McAlister, Jake Wilson, Joel McLaughlin, Kyle Collins and Jeff McClintock.
