Scripture Union Weekend

On May 9 a group of pupils set off in 2 minibuses to Rostrevor on a Scripture Union weekend. We were all very excited because it was non-uniform and we got out of class just before lunch because we had a long 3-hour journey ahead. By the time we reached Rostrevor Youth Centre it was 4 o’clock and we got some time to settle in and unpack while Hannah and Gemma went with Mrs. Moore and Mr. Scullion to buy food. After a while tea was ready and we all sat down to enjoy it. We were split into 4 groups for washing up and clearing tables. It was great having a laugh with Mrs. Moore in the kitchen, trying to act and messing about.
After tea we went on a long walk up the nearest part of the Mourne Mountains, to the Cloghmore Stone, to burn off some calories! Mr. Law must have burnt off the most calories because most of the way he had 2 pupils (not naming any names) hanging on to the back of his first aid backpack. We were ready for supper later, and played some team games. Lights were supposed to be out by 12.45 a.m., but it took a few more ‘hints’ from the teachers to get us to settle – there was so much to talk about!

The teachers had taken our mobiles the night before, to help us get some sleep, but that meant Mr. Law had to knock our door loudly at 5 a.m., to give us time to get ready for an early breakfast! Then we headed off to Newry, where we spent time shopping, before travelling along the coast road to Newcastle. Then we had lunch and some time to see around the town. In the afternoon we made our way into the middle of the mountains for an ‘optional’ short hike. We made the mistake of deciding to go. The rain came on heavily, and we were soaked. Mr. Law led us through waterlogged fields and across a small stream, which Gillian fell into while pretending to be a leprechaun.
After a barbeque that evening, we settled down for more games and fun. Eventually it was time for bed, but not before playing practical jokes on Mrs. Moore (Gillian turned her mouth blue with joke sweets!).
Next morning after breakfast we gathered round on the sofas and Mr. Scullion presented his own special worship service, which was the most interesting service I ever witnessed.
A short walk into the Forest Park and it was time to eat yet again. Then we loaded up the buses and headed home.
This year’s Scripture Union trip was a great experience and it had brought our school SU closer together and taught us how to work in groups with people we didn’t know very well before. It was great fun and we would highly recommend this to anyone and everyone.

Scripture Union meetings

These take place at lunchtime once a week. They will be starting up in January, so watch for notices. Anyone is welcome, as we meet to find out more about our relationship with God.
