Samuel Flying the Flag for the Royal British Legion

Year 12 pupil, Samuel Leslie, has made us very proud here in Dunluce. In a very short time he has earned respect for the work he does with the Royal British Legion and currently holds the role of Standard Bearer – an important ceremonial role – and has even performed exceptionally in competitions.

Just over a year ago the Bushmills Branch of the Royal British Legion decided to form a youth section. They meet on the second and fourth Thursday of each month in the Village Hall, Portballintrae from 7.30 pm – 9.30 pm.

The aim of the Youth Section is to inform and educate the young in all aspects of the British Legion through various club activities including canoeing, kayaking, scuba diving and snorkelling. As this is a charity the young people took part in bag packing and helped out recently at the ‘Bushmills Through the Wars’ Exhibition to raise funds.  Some of the members are very musical and regularly practice marching with Samuel becoming the branch Standard Bearer. He came second at a youth competition in Cookstown Royal British Legion in October this year. Samuel now carries the standard at all parades and was proud to be bearer at the Festival of Remembrance held at the Waterfront Hall in Belfast earlier this year.

He also attended the Poppy Launch in Bushmills Primary School, Youth Section Gala Evening, Sunday Service on East Strand at the Airshow, Bushmills Branch Festival of Remembrance.  Samuel hopes to continue carrying the standard for many years to come.
